Christmas Spectacular The Fine Arts Department’s annual Christmas Spectacular fundraiser was held November 27 and featured performers such as the Wall O’ Sound Marching Band, Christmas Band, Jazz Band, Collegians rock-n-roll band, Concert Choir, Vocé vocal ensemble, the Color Guard, and the Centralettes dance line. A reception followed in Mabry Cafeteria and featured art by ECCC art students and holiday fare by the college’s Culinary Arts Technology program. Christmas Parade Entertainment The ECCC Wall O’ Sound Marching Band participated in four Christmas parades across the college district, including the Carthage Christmas Parade, Forest Christmas Parade, Union Christmas Parade, and Decatur Christmas Parade. The band also marched in the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Philadelphia on January 19, 2019.

JANUARY 2019

First Place Design East Central Community College freshman Ashley Clark of Noxapater had the winning design in the SkillsUSA pin design contest sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Edu- cation. Her design was transformed into the state pin that was given to all Mississippi parti- cipants at the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Ky., in June 2019. Clark is a student in the college’s Carpentry Technology program. SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. Art Mural Art students at ECCC brightened up an area of the Mississippi Department of Child Protec- tion Services building in Decatur by painting a mural on the wall of the Family Visitation Room. The MDCPS reached out to the college’s Art Department requesting the room be paint- ed to provide a more pleasing space for the foster youth they serve. Sophomore art major Hal- ley Brooks of Carthage created a sketch of the mural. Once completed and approved, other art majors assisting in the painting of the mural were Cassidy Jenkins of Philadelphia, Joe Prine III of Louin, Keli Smith of Forest, and Rebekah Smith of Chunky. ECCC student Kaitlyn Morris of Conehatta also assisted. Boykin Joins Advisory Group

Regena Boykin of Conehatta, associate director for technology management at ECCC, was selected to serve on the Jenzabar One Advisory Group for Advising. Jenzabar is the college’s administrative software provider. The role of the group is to serve as a cus- tomer resource to the Jenzabar Advisory Board and to help set the direction for Jenzabar One for Advising. Membership includes representatives from the customer base who have demonstrated an in-depth understanding of the Jenzabar One Advising Module. Basketball Be Our Guest Nights The college offered special Be Our Guest nights at basketball games for high school students in each of the counties in the district in January and February. High school students in Leake County visited January 10 for the games against Pearl River, high school students in Scott County visited January 14 for the games with Co-Lin, students in Newton County were the guests January 28 when Southwest visited Brackeen-Wood Gym, students from Neshoba County were in attendance January 31 when East Central faced Gulf Coast, and students from Winston County were guests at the February 11 games with Jones. The students were admit- ted free and door prizes were awarded. Baseball First Pitch Dinner Ron Perkins of Louisville, a former Diamond Warrior and captain of the 1998 state championship team, was the featured speaker at the annual ECCC Baseball First Pitch Dinner in Mabry Cafeteria. Perkins is an obesity care specialist with Novo Nordisk. The annual event serves as a fundraiser for the baseball program. In addition to dinner and Perkins’ address, Head Baseball Coach Neal Holliman introduced his 2019 team and the 2019 Diamond Darlings, along with other special presentations and recognition.

ECCC will offer a new program in Diesel Equipment Technology in Philadelphia beginning in Fall 2019, pending approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The instructional program, which will
