exposed components of the computer lab, which will provide a safer student environment and also allow for a reorganized class- room promoting better instructor-student interaction. Annual Report Card The annual Community College Performance Profile, or Report Card, as required by the state of Mississippi, once again gave ECCC high marks in several areas. In the 2016-2017 Community College Report Card, ECCC was among the best in the state in the areas of College Readiness, Student Success, Student Retention, and Student Progress. In College Readiness, ECCC ranked among the top in average ACT composite score of entering freshmen. In Student Success, ECCC ranked among the state’s elite in the percentage of full-time entering freshmen graduating within three years. The college also ranked high in the percentage of students transferring out to Mississippi public four-year universities. In Student Retention, East Central was among the top in retention rate of students in for-credit transfer degree programs and in total retention. In Student Progression, ECCC showed strength in helping full-time students earn credits to graduation at a pace aligning with on-time completion. East Central ranked near the top in developmental mathematics students completing College Algebra. Special Needs Prom Theta Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges at ECCC, hosted its third “Fairy Tale Ball” prom for special needs students November 16 at Pierce Castle in Newton County. This has become a very popular annual event for students who receive special services from schools in the ECCC district of Leake, Neshoba, Newton, Scott and Winston counties. Theta Xi members raised money to stage the prom through various fundraisers and the help of area businesses that pur- chased sponsorships. The special needs students who attended were served a meal and received prom party favors. East Central students served as their dates. Off-Campus Registration ECCC instructional counselors visited four of the college’s off-campus centers in November to assist students with spring 2019 course registration. The instructional counselors visited Carthage, Choctaw, Forest, and Louisville during one week. They spent five hours at each location assisting students. The counselors also visited off-site locations in Spring 2019.
Warrior Hall Groundbreaking East Central Community College broke ground on its new Warrior Hall football operations center November 13. The estimated $2.6 million, 12,300 square-foot facility will be located just outside the north end zone of Warrior Field at Bailey Stadium. War- rior Hall will contain locker rooms for players and coaches, a team meeting room, position conference rooms, coaches’ offices, an equipment room, a players’ lounge, and a laundry room. It will also house a state-of-the-art training room to be used by stu- dent-athletes in all nine varsity sports at the college. The architect for Warrior Hall is Eley Guild Hardy Architects of Biloxi. The contractor is J&J Contractors Inc. of Collinsville.
DECEMBER 2018 Toys for Tots
The East Central Community College Career & Technical Education division once again spearheaded the Toys for Tots drive on campus. Over the years, the ECCC campus community has contributed an average of 500 toys a year that are distributed by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Those wishing to donate a new, unwrapped toy could drop them off at various locations on campus. Top Surgical Tech Student Trey Kellum of Newton was recognized as ECCC’s Surgical Technology Student of the Year prior to the program’s pinning cere- mony in December for the 12 students who completed the 12-month program. Kellum was presented the award in recognition of his academic excellence in the classroom and performance in clinical settings.
