ECCC softball squad prepares for MACJC State Softball Tournament

East Central Community College's playoff-bound softball squad split a doubleheader with Pearl River Community College in the regular season fmale held Saturday. The Lady Diamond Warriors fell 6-I in the opener but rallied for a 5-1 decision in the second contest to complete the regular season at 30-14 overall and 14-10 in the MACJC South DivJsion. Next up for East Central is the MACJC State Softball Tournament, scheduled to start Thursday and hosted by South Division champion Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston. EC, the South No. 3 seed, will battle North No. 2
Sded (TBA) at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 2 in first-round action of the single elimination event. Semifinals are set for noon and 2 p.m. followed by the champi– onship game at 5 p.m. Friday, May3. In the first game with Pearl River, Lindsey Beard of Clarkdale led the EC offense with an RBI single. Singles each were contributed by Ty Buckley, Dakota Vowell and Marlee Massey, all of Neshoba Central; Amber McBroom of Brandon; Kaylin Hopkins of Louisville; and Casey Cherry of Union. Haley Stephens scored EC's lone run. In the second game, EC's
offense came alive with McBroom leading the attack with two singles and four RBis. Also having productive out– ings at the plate were LaJoya Griffin of Philadelphia and Buckley, double and single each; Vowell and Beard, two singles each; AJ Peeler of Neshoba Central, RBI double; and Massey and Morgan Poner of Enterprise, singles each. Tryouts for the 2013-14 East Central Community College fast– pitch softball team will be held Thesday, May 21. Activities begin at 2 p.m. on the Lady Warrior softball field on the Decatur campus.
