Ter ry Underwood has resigned as head football coach at East CeJttral Community College in Decatur, announced ECCC Presi– dent Dr. Phil A. Sutphin. Underwood's resignation was approved during today's monthly meeting of the College's Board of Trustees. Dr. Sutphin said Under– wood will remain on staff as ath– letic director until his contract expires on June 30, 2008. A new athletic director will be named "at a later.date." Steve Cheatham, who served the past year as Underwood's defensive coordinator, has bc~n named as Underwood's successor

Prior to reJOin· ing the ECCC staff last year, Cheatham served two years as head football coach at Ncshoba Central High School. He

High School and served as an assistant at Dothan (lua.) and Neshoba Central high schools. His coaching experience also includes a stint as a graduate assistant at Clemson University. His six-year r ecord as head coach is 46-20. A 1974 gr aduate of Neshoba Central High School, Cheatham attended ECCC from 1974-76 and received a bachelor 's degree in health, physical education and recreation fromMississippi State University in 1978. He earned a master's degree in secondary guidance and counseling from Clemson University in 1995.
