Miss. educator's work travels with WWII exhibit

The AMOCiated Presa DECATUR- An instruc– tional kit created by a faculty member at East Central Com– munity College is travelingwith aSmithsonian Institute exhibit. Melinda Smith of Union developed thekitfor her English students when the Smithson– ian's traveling World War II exhibit was displayed on her campus last fall The exhibit, "Producefor Vic– tory: Posters on the American Home Front; 1941-45," is made up ofa numberofpostersused in support of the war effort in the U.S. duringWorldWar ll. Area veterans also provided memorabiliafor the display. Smith'skit will be sent to local communities and school sys– tems along the exhibit's route. The exhibit is scheduled to visit about 40 sites in Ten-

nessee, Louisiana, Missouri, Kansas and North Dakota through next year. It will be at the Clinton Library from May 24 to June 29. "I was really surprised, but obviously pleased, that the Smithsonian was interested in the instructional kit we had put together," Smith said. "' wrote the kit for the college and was glad to be of assistance for the exhibit." Smith said shewrote two ver– sions of the kit, one for class– rooms and one for civic and church groups, that included more than 40 activities that could be done before and after viewing the exlu"bit. One of the activities is for students to refer to chapter four of the book, My Dog Skip, by the late Mississip– pi author, Willie Morris, for dis– cussionabout the war years.
