East Central begins search for new dean of instruction
East Central Community College m Decatur has officially launched its search for a new dean of instruc· tion to replace the retirmg Dr. Brad Tucker, who will officially end his 40-year career at the two-year in– stitution June 30, 1991 Dr 1\Jcker. a Leake County native. returned to his alma mater m the summer of 1951 where he served three years as vocational– agricullura l instructor at the old ~ewton County AgncWtural High School which was then part of the East Central Junior College system. He later began a seven-year teaching stint as academic agricultural instructor for the col– lege before being named dean o! in– struction in 1960, a post he continues ro hold When he retires. Dr. Tucker wiH have accumulated 42 years total ·ervice m the field or educahon The search for Dr. Tucker's suc– cessor was officially begun at the college board of tr ustees' November meeting as adver ltsements publiciz– mg the future vacancy were approv– ed for release to the media and various Institutions of higher learning. Board orficials announced ap– plications for the post will be receiv– ed through Jan 31, 1991. I nterviews a 1·e scheduled to be completed by Feb. 28, 1991. The college's new dean of instruction will be announced on \1arch 5. 1991. In other board matters, a repor t was made concerning the 1991 spring semester schedule. with day dasses set to begin on Wednesday, Jan 16. 1991 Registration for day classes will take place Jan. 14-15

Concerning student ser vices, il was announced that Dean of Students Dr Phil Sutphin wa s selected to attend the "Train the 1'rainees'' Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Workshop scheduled in lUlleigb. In old business, reports w~re given on the Ins titutional Self-Study, Homecoming 1990 and legislative proposals from the Mississippi As sociation of Community and Junior Colleges Trustees were also remmded tha t the next meeting would be held Tuesday, Dec. 4. Concerning new business, the Chrtstmas Parade schedule for the Warrior Mar ching Band was an– nounced for the 1990 season. The East Central band will participate in the Union parade on Nov. 29; Mor– ton, Dec. 1; Newton, Dec. 4; a nd Decatur, Dec. 7. On a final item, trustees gave a p– proval of the college's represe~ta tion at the SACS Annual Meetmg planned for Dec. 7-12 in Atlanta.

Dr. Tucker outlined the various en– trepreneurial workshops bemg of– fered by lhe college al Lake Tiak O' Khata near Louisville. The week– ly sPminars, which continue UU'Ough Dec. 17, are co-sponsored by the I.ouisviJJe branch of Easto\ er Bank for Savmgs. Speakers for each workshop afe provided by the ~ississippi Department of Economic and Community Development. Concerning budget and finance, busmec;s manager Harvey Trapp reported on the "findings, recom– mendationsand r~ponses'' for the college'· fiscal )ear audit for the period ending on June 30, 1989. The report showed the college was in compliance in almost all areas which were unoer review and a favorable evaluation was presented by state auditors. In other budget and finance areas, trustees approved a revision In the college's part-time and overload salary schedule. An increase in travel expenses was also included in the revised schedule. Trustees earlier approved the col– lege's financial statement and docket of claims for October, 1990. Approval was also made for the expenditure of funds from the P biladelphia-Neshoba County VocatiOnal-Techntcal Center's educational equipment and supplies reserve fund to pur c hase computer equipment and software.
