DECATUR - A familiar face was back on the East Central Junior College sidelines for the Warriorettes' game with Copiah– Lincoln Junior College. And her new team almost responded with a victory. Lucille Woods, who retired from coaching at ECJC a couple of years ago, pinch-hit for aihng coach Sammy Pace here Monday night in the Warriorettes' 71-65 loss to the visiting Lady Wolves. And Woods almost directed ECJC, 4-16, to a victory, but Co– Lin scored seven of the game's last nine points to improve its record to 14-4. Woods said she didn 't know she'd be called upon to return to the sidelines until about 90 minutes before the game, when Pace decided that the flu would keep him from the game. The veteran coach, now a full– time teacher at ECJC, had only been an observer of the War– rioretts until Monday's game. "I recrui t ed several of the sophomores to come here, and I had seen all of them play in high school, " Woods said. As for the game, the Warrioret– tes fell behind midway through the second half, then battled back to give Co-Lin a challenge. "We played team ball," said Woods about the comeback. "We
The Warriorettes also had their troubles with Co-Lin's pressing defense, she said. Co-Lin had taken a 56-49 lead with 9: 14 left, but ECJC scored 12 of the next 16 points - the last two on Faye McDonald's followup shot - to take a 61-60 lead with 5: 23 left. The Lady Wolves answered by scoring the next four points to take the lead for good. Mellissa Jimmerson's basket trimmed the lead back to 64-63 with 4: 23 left, but it would be as close as ECJC would get. Co-Lin stretched the lead back to five, then Patricia Rives' basket at 2:33 brought East Cen– tral within three, 68-65. But from there both teams went cold - ECJC never scored again, while Co-Lin added a free throw and basket by Sandra Scott with less than 15 seconds left. Scott led all scorers with 26 points, with teammate Kim Boyd adding 18 points. Four ECJC players scored in double figures, led by Regina Amos with 16 points. McDonald added 15, Jim– merson 14 and Tracy Stewart 10. As for Woods, she plans to return to the stands once Pace returns to the bench. "I just filled in today," she said. "I'm glad I made my choice."
