Basketball Begins Nov. 5 At ECJC . ~ .
Warriorettes lose pair to Hinds JC and Co-Lin tast Central Junior Col– lege women's basketball team, the Warriorettes, tra– veled to Wesson on January 17 to take on the Co-Lin women only to be defeated 79-65. The Warriorettes were trailing by five at the end of the first half but Co-Lin came alive in the second half led by Bridget Davis and Thresa Simpson who scored 18 and 15 points respectively. East Central was led by Mattie Burnside of Noxapater who made 29 points followed by Pam Coleman of Carthage with 14. The Warriorettes went up against the women of Clarke "Junior College on January 18 in the friendly atmosphere of the East Central gym and were big winners defeatin2 Clarke 91-82. Mattie Burn– side had a superb night . scoring 45 big points. Pam Coleman added 15 and Ste– phanie Townsend of !Lena .added 12. High scorer for Clarke was Sandra Cooks who scored 28 points. When the ECJC women played host to Hinds on January 24, they were de– feated 72-61. East Central was ahead by two at half but could not hang on to the lead in the second half. Mattie Burnside led the Warrior– ettes with 32 points and was the only double digit scorer fo~ East ~entral in this game. fraveltng to Utica Junior College, on January 27, the women s team experienced difficulties in the first half being down 41 17 at the half The Warriorettes could not gain any ground in the second half as the final score was ~2-57. Again, Mattie Burnside was the top scorer and the only Warriorette double digit scorer with 31 points. The overall record for the Warriorettes is 10-11 with four wins thus far in the south division.

The East Central Jumor College Warriors and Warriorettes begin their basketball season Nov. 5 at home against Meridian Junior Col– lege. The women's game will be at f) p. m. followed by the men's game at '7:30 p. m. The Warriorettes are led by sophomores Beverly Chambers of Morton and Joy Eichelberger of LOuisville, all-stater from last year. Coach Lucille Wood said, "We are looking forward to an improved season from last year. We have scrimmaged some teams and our group looks good for this early in the season. Some of our freshmen are ad– justing well to college play and we are ready for the season to begin." Returning sophomores for the War– riors are Johnny Gill of Walnut Grove, Dexter Myricks of Carthage, Andrew Garvin of Wurtland, KY and Ricky Griffith of Ashland_, Ky. All four started last year and give the Warriors leadership and · carry over in their system of play. Coach Steve Rives said, "We are excited about this year and ready to get started. Our freshmen are the best we've had since I've been here - . our depth is good. Hopefully we can 'tiiake up for a lack of height with · hard play."
