Policy Title: EMPLOYMENT OF EMPLOYEE’S RELATIVE(S)

Relatives of East Central Community College (ECCC) employees who are related within the third degree, by blood or marriage, as computed by the rule of civil law, shall not be employed, full-time or part-time in the functional area of responsibility requiring direct or indirect supervision by the employee. Relationships and degrees of kindred are defined as: A. First degree relatives include spouse, mother, father, sons, and daughters. B. Second degree relatives include grandparents, grandchildren, brothers and sisters. C. Third degree relatives include great-grandparents, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. D. Fourth degree relatives include great-great-grandparents, great-great-grandchildren, great uncles/aunts, first cousins, and great nieces/nephews. Relatives of the fourth degree and beyond may be employed without regard to their relationship to any employee. It is the responsibility of the Office of Human Resources to monitor the relationships of applicants to employees and to inform the individual who will make the hiring recommendation to the President of any potential violation of this procedure. This procedure shall apply to employees’ dependents that are enrolled as students at ECCC who participate in work study and other established student assistant programs. This procedure shall not apply to the circumstance of employees who are supervising relatives within the 3rd degree which existed prior to the approval of this policy by the ECCC Board of Trustees.
