Policy Title: FACULTY STATEMENT OF ACADEMIC FREEDOM
East Central Community College recognizes the right of a faculty member to present knowledge and pursue truth within his/her qualified subject areas. Though he/she has liberty to explore ideas, a faculty member ethically cannot demand that students endorse his/her personal beliefs nor require students to accept either side of a controversial issue. A faculty member has freedom to participate in the community, state, and nation as a private citizen. As a private citizen, however, his/her conduct should not reflect in a negative way on East Central Community College or on his/her role as teacher. Faculty members should realize that academic freedom does not grant academic license. Each instructor is responsible for his/her actions as teacher and as a private citizen.
