Policy Title: FACULTY LOAD

Semester Hour Loads

The standard teaching load for academic faculty is 15 semester hours. Any hours above 15, to a maximum of 21, will be remunerated at the established overload rate published in Policy 709. Career-technical faculty will teach the number of hours weekly as required for instruction utilizing the model curriculum. In no case shall a technical faculty member be scheduled to teach less than 20 hours each week. Pay for teaching overloads will be awarded when regular teaching loads have been fulfilled and additional class offerings are needed. Academic faculty with certain types of additional responsibility will be assigned a reduced load. Division Chairpersons will teach 12 semester hours as a standard load and be allowed a maximum of 18. Coach/Instructor personnel will be assigned 6, 9, or 12 semester hours, depending on specific coaching responsibilities for a given semester. Full-time administrators will be allowed to teach two (2) classes or up to a maximum of 6 semester hours (8 hours for classes with labs.) Remuneration will be at the established overload rate published in Policy 709.

Lecture and laboratory Duties

In classes requiring laboratory experiences, the classroom instructor also instructs in the laboratory. Laboratory instruction is equated at the ratio of two to one for the purpose of determining teaching load.

Teaching for Other Institutions

With permission from the Vice President for Instruction, East Central faculty are allowed to teach overloads not to exceed the specified hours under “Semester and Hour Loads” above. These overloads may be taught at ECCC or at other institutions, provided they do not involve contracts that are in violation of College policy or state law.

Preparations and Student Loads

A typical academic load is five classes. Skills classes are given consideration for fewer numbers of students per section. Efforts are made to limit preparations to three per instructor per semester.
