tennis team compiled a 3.25 GPA and was ranked 13th in the NJCAA and No. 4 in the MACJC. The baseball team had a 3.19 team GPA, which placed it 35th in the nation among baseball programs. The men’s soccer team compiled a 3.02 GPA and was ranked 20th in the nation and No. 4 among all MACJC men’s soccer programs. PBL National Honors

Members of ECCC’s Theta Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda received top honors at the organization’s 2018 National Leadership Conference held in Baltimore, Md. Theta Chi chapter received 10 awards overall, including two first place awards, and $1,000 in cash prizes in both the Computer Animation and Parliamentary Procedure categories. The group also received a $1,000 March of Dimes grant, was recognized as second place overall for March of Dimes fundraising efforts, was one of only two schools in the state of Mississippi named a Gold Seal chapter, and received PBL Outstanding Recognition, which was awarded to only 10 chapters in the nation. Award winners included Jackie Cates of Newton and Samantha McMullan of Decatur, first place, Computer Animation; Nicole Ferguson, Shelby Greenwood, Sam Loper, Khalil Triplett and Justin Wilcher, all of Philadel- phia, first place, Parliamentary Procedures; Autumn McMillan of Philadelphia and Brittney Watkins of For- est, third place, Local Chapter Annual Business Report;

Jessica Everett of Decatur, fourth place, Client Service; Alexus Patrick of Forest and Abby Smith of Philadelphia, fourth place, So- cial Media Challenge; Ferguson and Triplett, fifth place, Financial Services; Alexis Rover of Little Rock, sixth place, Public Speak- ing; Sydney Baucum of Decatur and Everett, sixth place, Analysis and Decision Making; Joseph Blount of Philadelphia, seventh place, Forensic Accounting; and Baucum, ninth place, Job Interview. Tennis Academic Honors Both the ECCC men’s and women’s tennis teams along with four players from each team were recognized for academic success by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The ITAAll-Academic Team award is open to any ITAprogram that has a cumulative team grade- point average of 3.20 or above. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must have a grade-point average of at least 3.50.

AUGUST 2018 Scholarship Recognition Reception

More than 400 donors, students, and their families attended the East Central Community College Scholarship Recognition Recep- tion August 23 in Brackeen-Wood Gym. Among the guests were 130 of the 150 students who received ECCC Foundation scholar- ships for the 2018-19 academic year. Eight of those students gave video testimonials about how their Foundation scholarship will assist with their academic and career pursuits. Dual Credit Preview Day ECCC hosted its first Preview Day for dual credit high school students. The event was designed to introduce the students to ECCC and college life. Those participating learned about the advantages of being a dual credit student at East Central, including free admission to athletics and other events, use of the college’s Wellness Center, student ID cards, college email addresses, and other benefits. There was also information on preparing for college academics and the use of Remind101 to receive important information about college deadlines and events. The Preview Day concluded with an ice cream social and students getting their ID cards made. New Program Offerings Criminal Justice Technology and Cyber Security Technology were new academic offerings at ECCC beginning with the Fall 2018 semester. The Criminal Justice Technology program provides students with the skill base necessary to become professionals in law enforcement, corrections, and other criminal justice fields. The Cyber Security Technology program provides students with the skill base necessary to become professionals in network administration, network support specialist, computer network defense, intrusion detection systems, red team technician, and penetration testing. Those completing either program will earn an Associate of Applied Science degree, with options for a Career or a Technical certificate. Transfer GPA Success Students who transferred from East Central Community College to public four-year institutions in Mississippi earned the highest cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of all community college transfers in the state of Mississippi in both 2017 and 2018. Ac- cording to data from the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL), students who transferred from East Central to one of the state’s eight public, four-year institutions earned a 3.34 GPA at baccalaureate graduation in both 2017 and 2018. The 3.34 GPA was the highest cumulative grade-point average of any community college in Mississippi over the past six years. In four of the past six years, students who transferred from ECCC to a public four-year college or university in Mississippi earned the highest GPA of all state community colleges.
