JULY 2018 High School Equivalency Graduation

Thirty-five students received their high school equivalency di- plomas at the annual graduation ceremony held in the Vickers Fine Arts Center auditorium. Rev. Larry Reed, Sr., pastor of Midway Baptist Church in Little Rock, served as guest speaker. EC Day at the Fair The annual EC Day at the Fair was held July 30 at the Found- ers Square Pavilion at the Neshoba County Fair in Phila- delphia. There was another great turnout of ECCC alumni, students, parents and friends. The Collegians rock-n-roll band, Centralettes dance line, and cheerleaders performed, and Pres- ident Dr. Billy Stewart gave a college update. New this year was an Alumni Association Social held from 5-7 p.m. in front of the David and Roberta Wheeler Byars Cabin No. 79. SkillsUSA National Honors East Central Career & Technical Education students received numerous awards during the 54th annual SkillsUSANational Leadership and Skills Competition held in Louisville, Ky. More than 16,000 people, including students, teachers and business partners, participated in the weeklong event. Award winners included Emily Nelson of Little Rock, third place, Early Child- hood Education; Jodi Vines of Stonewall, fourth place, Job Interview; Courtney Tillman of Decatur, sixth place, Prepared Speech; Jacob Robertson of Newton, 13th place, Extemporane- ous Speech; Elaina Boyle of Philadelphia, 17th place, Cosmetol- ogy; and Jonathan Collins of Forest, 22nd place, Carpentry. ECCC Trustees Honored Five members of the ECCC Board of Trustees were recognized for years of dedicated service at the 2018 Mississippi Associa- tion of Community and Junior Colleges’ Trustees Annual Con- ference in Biloxi, including Prentice Copeland of Philadelphia, 50 years of service; Randal Livingston of Louisville, 30 years of service; Dr. Jimmy Hollingsworth of Lake, board chairman, 15 years of service; and Van Lucas of Newton, 10 years of service. Ricky Goldman of Philadelphia was honored at the August meeting of the ECCC Board of Trustees for 15 years of service. Student-Athlete Academic Honors Seventy-five ECCC student-athletes were honored by either the National Junior College Athletic Association or the Mis- sissippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges, or both organizations, for their academic performance during the 2017-18 academic year. In all, 45 ECCC student-athletes were recognized by the NJCAA and 75 were honored by the MAC- JC. East Central was third among all 15 community colleges in Mississippi in the number of student-athletes honored by the NJCAA. Athletic Team Academic Success Six ECCC varsity sports teams earned NJCAAAcademic Team of the Year Honorable Mention awards for having met the grade-point average requirement of 3.00 or better for the 2017-18 academic year. With a 3.67 team GPA, the softball team led all softball programs in the MACJC and finished tied for second among all softball programs in the NJCAA. The women’s soccer team finished 10th among all women’s soccer programs in the NJCAA and third in the state with a 3.39 GPA. The women’s tennis team finished the year with a team GPA of 3.29, which ranked No. 26 in the nation. The Warrior men’s

Percentage of ECCC’s fall 2018 student body residing within the college’s five-county district. Number of people in the five-county district trained through ECCC’s Workforce Development division during fiscal year 2018.
