EXECUTIVE SUMMARY JUNE 30, 2019
The data compilation for the academic year 2018-19 is exactly as it is labeled – a collection of statistical and other data-oriented reports updated through June 30, 2019. In many cases, the reports included have been reviewed by councils and/or committees, and in some cases presented to the Board of Trustees, throughout the year. For the compilation, the reports are presented without comment or analysis. The intent is primarily two-fold: 1. The compilation is to provide a convenient single point of reference for statistical data pertaining to the College. Administrators may find the hardcopy book format useful at state or regional meetings. 2. The compilation contains information commonly used as assessment instruments for institutional effectiveness expected outcomes. The organization of the collection is designed to help planners find, access, and cite relevant data points. The highest and best use for the compilation is in the support of evidence-based decision-making within the regular planning processes of the College. To this end, organization of data is by institutional commitment, reflecting the role of 2020 Vision as the guiding strategic document directing all other planning activities. With no prior narrative or analytical summaries accompanying the data, the reader is encouraged to identify trends and points of particular interest from a fresh perspective. Upon such identifications, the College’s committee/council structure is the most appropriate venue for discussing evidence and potential initiatives stemming from same. Councils and committees are also encouraged to provide the Office of Institutional Research & Effectiveness with suggestions for improving or enhancing future compilations. Such could include requests for new reports or additional data points/disaggregations. For example, new reports on financial ratios are in development for the 2019-20 edition.
Definitions:
150% - One plus one-half of the minimum number of terms required for completion of a degree or certificate. In the case of two-year programs, 150% equals three academic years.
Academic Year – summer CCYY, fall CCYY, spring CC(YY+1).
Academic Probation – Student receiving a term grade point average of less than 1.50.
Academic Suspension – Student on Academic Probation status receiving a term grade point average of less than 1.50.
Cohort – A defined group of students intended for tracking. Usually, the unduplicated count of first-time, full-time, degree-seeking students in a fall term.
Cohort Default Rate – Official federal loan default rate for the Family Federal Education Loan (FFEL) program, commonly referenced as Title IX loans.
Degree-seeking – Student that has declared a program of study to end in a degree or certificate. Dual credit students are not degree-seeking.
Developmental Course – A remedial course in which the student does not accumulate credit toward a degree or certificate.
Dual Enrolled – Student enrolled in courses for college credit before graduation from secondary school. Dual Credit is a special case of dual enrollment wherein the coursework is simultaneously transcripted for both college and secondary school credit. First-time – a student entering college in a degree-seeking capacity for the first time. First time status does not include dual credit work. Students whose first degree-seeking term is in the summer and continue enrollment in the immediately following fall term are counted as first time in that fall term.
Full-time – For ECCC, at least 15 enrolled hours in a semester (beginning fall 2014). For IPEDS, at least 12 enrolled hours in a semester.
General Education Competencies – For ECCC, there are six general education competencies that all degree completers should attain adequate skill level: computation, critical thinking, information technology, oral communication, reading comprehension, written communication.
Graduation Rate – Numerator count of students completing a degree or certificate within a defined timeframe divided by a denominator count of cohort students beginning as first-time, full-time, degree-seeking students at the initiation of the timeframe. Institutional Outcomes – Statistics computed primarily for the purpose of evaluating the progress of a particular institutional commitment. While other measures also factor into assessment, institutional outcomes tend to be comprised of quantities calculated through well-defined, specific formulas. Persistence Fall-Spring – Numerator count of students returning for a subsequent spring term divided by a denominator cohort count of first-time, full-time, degree- seeking students in the baseline fall term.
Quality Point Average (QPA) – Total term quality points divided by total term credit hours. Withdrawals count for zero points and are included in the computation.
Remediation – Students with ACT subject scores of less than a 17 in English or a 19 in Mathematics.
Retention Rate – Numerator count of students returning for an immediately subsequent fall term plus students completing an interim degree or certificate divided by a denominator count of cohort students beginning as first-time, full-time, degree- seeking students at the beginning of the baseline fall term. Return Rate – Numerator count of students returning for an immediately subsequent fall term divided by a denominator count of cohort students beginning as first-time, full-time, degree-seeking students at the beginning of the baseline fall term.
Transfer-Out – Student that transfers to a subsequent two- or four- year postsecondary institutional without completing a degree or certificate at the original institution.
Transfer-Out Rate – Numerator count of student count transferring-out before the timeframe divided by the denominator count of first-time, full-time, degree-seeking students in the cohort at the beginning of the timeframe.
