JUCO BASKETBALL East Central takes South Division basketball doubleheader from Hinds From school reports

The Hinds Lady Bulldogs fell to 6-8 overall and 0-5 the South Division. In the men's action that followed, East Central pulled away in the second half to defeat the Hinds Bull dogs 74-59 in an MACJC South Divi sion matchup. The Warriors fell behind early by six points before going on a 22-6 run and grabbing a 10-point lead. East Central led 36-28 at the half. East Central broke the game open in the second half, leading by

as many as 22 on one occasion before securing the 15-point victory. Sophomore guard Ravion Henry out of Leake Central High School led all scores on the evening with 18 points for the Warriors. He also pulled down nine rebounds. Prince McDaniel out of Pascagoula High School added 13 points, and freshman Tonzell Handy of Lanier High School had 12 points. Forward Derrick Dandridge out of White Sta tion High School (Memphis, Tenn.) had 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for East Central. Hinds was led by Corey McLaurin's 17 points. The East Central Warriors improved to 8-6 overall on the season and 3-2 in MACJC South Division play. The Hinds Bulldogs fell to 4-10 and 1-4 in the South Divi sion. The Warriors and Lady Warriors return to action Thursday, Jan. 21, when they host Pearl River Commu nity. Game limes are 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. East Central travels to Summit on Monday, Jan. 25, for a double header against Southwest Missis sippi Community. Game times are 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

DECATUR - East Central Com munity College's Johnta Hughes scored six points in the final 30 sec onds of the contest to help the Lady Warriors preserve a hard-fought 76 69 MACJC South Division win over the Hinds Community College Lady Bulldogs Tuesday night. It was the seventh straight win for the East Central Lady Warriors. East Central never trailed in the contest, and led by 14 at the half and by as many as 16 in the third period. However, a furious second half comeback by Hinds culminated with a layup by Areleatha Gipson with 4:40 remaining to tie the game at 60. It was the first tie since 0-0 at the opening tip. With the score tied again at 66 and just 2:21 remaining, East Cen tral went on a 10 to 3 run to close out the 76-69 win. Kalybriah Haskin out of Olympian High School (Chula Vista, Calif.) hit a 3-pointer to give East Central the lead at 69 66 before Hughes took over.
