By Nick Gunter I Posted: Wed 1:29 PM, Jul 06, 2016 I Updated: Wed 6:06 PM, Jul 06, 2016 DECATUR, Miss. (WTOK) - The culinary arts kitchen on the campus of East Central Community College was full of young chefs.

"We learned how to cook pizza and the different ingredients and the temperature," explained Carson Payne.

These students were taking "college" classes at the annual kids' college East Central hosts each summer.

"My grandmother and mother always told me that I would have to learn how to take care of myself and the first step in that was knowing how to cook. So I think it is a good place to start for any kid," said Barry Karrh, Culinary Arts Instructor at East Central Community College.

The amateur chefs were learning all about how to make a proper pizza from scratch, among other foods.

"We had to do the dough first, then we had to put the toppings on it and we had to put it in the oven," explained Aniyah Butler. AF In addition to learning how to make pizza, students were gaining knowledge on proper kitchen techniques and the dos and don'ts when handling various equipment and tools. c~ NE "They learned how to hold and handle a knife and how to wash things so they don't get cut in dirty dish water. Just things that we take for granted sometimes," said Karrh. SP The little chefs in training were asking questions and learning more about the ingredients people eat and prepare, ME all while enjoying the food. OT "They just come in and have some fun. And it is great that they ask any question that comes into their head because that means they want to learn and I love it," explained Karrh.
