ECCC baseball beats Northwest to advance in Region 23 winner's bracket

The No. 10 East Central Community College baseball team beat No. 18 Northwest Mississippi Community College 3-2 in game two of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 23 Baseball Tournament Thursday, May 19, at the Clark/Gay Baseball Complex on the Decatur campus. The win moved East Central to a winner's bracket game against Jones County Junior College scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, May 20. No. 3 ranked Jones beat No. 1 ranked LSU Eunice 8-2 in the first game of the tournament Thursday. East Central and Jones County have met four times this season, with each team winning two games. ECCC defeated Jones County twice in last weekend's Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges State Tournament, including in the championship game. Sophomore Peyton Cain of Newton County High School picked up his 10th win of the season for ECCC against Northwest and threw his first nine-inning game, striking out three, allowing one earned run, and six hits. The Diamond Warriors outhit the Rangers 12-6 with sophomore Michael Davis of Clinton High School leading the ECCC offense going 3-for-4 at the plate and racking up two RBI. ECCC picked up single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings on an RBI single off the bat of Cole Prestegard of Huntsville (Ala.) High School and an RBI double and an RBI single off the bat of Davis. Northwest will face LSU Eunice in a loser's bracket elimination game Friday, May 20, at 2 p.m.

East Central improved to 37-15 overall, while Northwest dropped to 29-20 on the season.
