Students trot for a good cause

NEWTON COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) • Students from Newton County Elementary school were out of the classroom and on the track at EBsf'Centl"!Feommunity CcJlteVeforl\s annual Turkey Trot.
"It Is really about promoting not staying inside and watching television and playing video games next week but instead getting outside and enjoying the beautiful weather and getting healthy; explained Tamra Mills. 4th Grade Teacher at NCES.
The annual event hopes to promote fitness and wellness for students. staff and even parents as the holiday season approaches. "By having their parents come out and join in on the fun along with all the teachers participating and they do a wonderful job putting this on; said Jessica Weems a NCES parent. This year marked a new partnership with East Central and their Warrior Wellness program which alms to promote how the community can be their best self. "It is even more important for them to learn health habits and 1f nothing else like we are doing here today just being active; explained Crystal Fitzgerald, Wellness Coordiila orit ECCC With kids running, walking and even jogging along with their parents, it can help foster a healthy lifestyle for years to come. "For the parents to be supportive of the kids and that is where the kids are going to learn their habits from and it will 1ust shape them for a lifetime of health and happiness; said Fitzgerald. As part of the program, canned food donations were also collected during the month of November and during the event. ·we were going to donate all of our canned foods we collected the whole month of November a to a local food pantry so it will help families in our county; said Mills. As parents explain, through teaching kids lessons about health and fitness to the importance of helping others, everyone is learning valuable lessons in cougar nation. "Teach our children what the importance is about thanksgiving and just giving back and not necessarily 1ust taking 1t in for ourselves; explained Weems. Leaders with Newton County Schools explain they hope to continue the Turkey Trot for many years to come
