Robertson departs Kentwood for college job- Hammond Star: Sports "Coach, we are truly going to miss you," wrote Carliesha Burns, who will also be a junior next season. "You have encouraged me and pushed me to be a better player, your words of encouragement will never be forgotten. I really enjoyed your time coaching us, you are truly a blessing. Good luck and I wish you the best on your new journey. You will always be my Coach Nene." Robertson also helped the team make big strides on the court as they totaled just 23 combined wins in the four seasons before her arrival in 2014 and hadn't won a playoff game since 2010. Kentwood put their playoff woes to rest last season, though, defeating Cedar Creek, 47-34, at home and nearly knocking off No. 4 Montgomery on the road before falling, 48-46, as the 13 seed. In addition to the Lady Roos' playoff success and their 15-11 overall record, the team also finished 9-3 in District 6-1A including a historic win over district rival, Southern Lab. "Just seeing the look on (my players') faces when they made that happen, that's something that will stick with me forever," Robertson said of the team's win over Southern Lab, the first in decades. "Our road in the playoffs will stick with me and there's so many other things I could say because I have so many memories that I'm leaving behind. "What I'll miss most is being around those girls - those girls are my everything," she added. "I love being at the school and teaching was good to me but I couldn't wait until 3 o'clock to be with my girls and to practice. Basketball is what I do and they made it fun for me so what I'll miss the most is them. But it's just one chapter of the book closing and another chapter starts." That chapter will begin August 8 when Robertson joins the East Central Community College basketball program. The Lady Warriors were 24-3 last season with a 15-1 mark in conference play and also won the According to Robertson, the 42-year old was in need of an assistant and placed calls to two different college coaches in Alabama and Texas, both of whom named Robertson as a potential candidate. That was enough motivation for Porter to reach out to Robertson and he eventually extended her an offer to join the team's coaching staff. "We sound like we're on the same page and he sounds like somebody I can learn from because you can never stop learning and getting more knowledge on the game," Robertson said. "They had five girls that signed to Dl schools (last season). It's a good fit for me to try to get to the Division I level with so many kids coming in and out that I can help and get more experience so I can make that next step." ECCC is a junior college program and Robertson said she's excited for the opportunity to move into the college ranks. She one day hopes to make the jump to the Division I level and possibly beyond but for now, she'll be focused on helping the Warriors continue their success on the JUCO level. Robertson said she'll have a plethora of responsibilities at her new school including working with post players, recruiting, scouting opponents, breaking down film and helping athletes in the classroom. She said the time spent as a head coach at Kentwood has certainly helped in preparing her for the next level and the support she's received from the community has been greatly appreciated.
