ECCC to HostJSU Jazz Band Special to The Star DECATUR - As part of the inaugural season of East Central Community College's Cultural Arts Series, the Fine Arts Department will host lhe Jackson State University Jazz Ensemble Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Huff Auditorium on campus. The public is invited and there is no charge to attend. The JSU Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Russell Thomas Jr., professor of music and Director of Jazz Education, and is made up of both music and non- music majors and includes students from across the United States. The group has received many honors and awards and has performed at various venues throughout 1 the region, including the New Orleans Heritage and Jazz Festival. Many internationally know jazz personalities have been featured in concert with the JSU Ensemble. Among the most noteworthy have been the Count Basie Orchestra and Dizzy Gillespie. The Cultural Arts series began as a way to bring performing artists and visual artists to the campus throughout the year for both EC students and the community, according to Vicki Blaylock, ECCC Fine Arts Department Chair.
