ECCC softball opens playoffs Thursday
Tbe 11th ranked East Cen– tral CommunityCollege Lady Diamond Warriors will open National Junior College Ath– letic Association Region 23 Tournament play Thursday, May 7, against the No. 1 team in the nation, Louisiana State University-Eunice, at 4 p.m. at Community Bank Park in Ellisville. Region 23 Tournament host and No. 2 ranked Jones County Junior College will meet No. 10 ranked Missis– sippi Gulf Coast Community College in the other opening round game at 6 p.m. Tbe champion or the double elim– ination tournament will be crowned on Saturday, May 9. The top two teams from the regional will advance to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament May 13-16. ECCC finishes as runner-up in MACJC State Gulf Coast scored three runs m the first inning and : six more in the fifth to defeat
ECCC 9-3 and win the MACJC State Softball Cham– pionship held at Jones County Junior College in El– lisville. Facing an early 3-0 deficit on Sunday, the Lady Dia– mond Warriors (40-10) clawed back into the game with two runs in the second inning on a double by Karo– line Holsonback and a sacri– fice fly by Katlyn Duke. A sacrifice fly by Holsonback in the fourth tied the game at three. From there on it was all Gulf Coast, winning by the final 9-3 margin despite only out-hitting ECCC 10-9. Cait– lyn Aldous, Mallory Turner and Anna Katherine Nowell all had two hits for East Cen– tral. Freshman pitcher Lacey Hill took the loss, throwing four and a third innings and giving up seven runs on seven hits. Hill threw 21 in– nings during the four-game weekend.
