ECCC Holds Recognition Ceremony for Renovated Residence Halls
East Central Community College recognized members of the Mississippi Legislature, the ECCC Board of Trustees, and other key people today for their role in the much-needed summer 2015 renovation of two male residence halls on the Decatur campus. The ceremony was held in the newly renovated Stella W. Newsome Hall. After the ceremony, members of the ECCC Board of Trustees, local area legislators, and others in attendance toured a residence hall room and common areas of the facility. Newsome Hall, along with LO. Todd Hall, underwent extensive renovations during summer 2015. The renovations included new flooring, furniture, lighting, restroom facilities, and heating and air conditioning, among other improvements. Common spaces also were updated with new furniture and large acreen televisions. Speaking at the Recognition Ceremony were ECCC President Dr. Billy Stewart; State Rep. Randy Rushing of Decatur; Taylor Guild of Jackson, principal of EGH Architects; Dr. Jimmy Hollingsworth of Lake, chair of the ECCC Board of Trustees; and Jerry Smith of Philadelphia, vice chair of the ECCC Board of Trustees. "These dormitories were built in 1957 and have welcomed and housed countless students since that time, with only minor upgrades. Today, we recognize the individuals and groups who without their support we would have been unable to complete this project. ... We are blessed to partner with all of you as we strive to meet the needs of our students," said Dr. Stewart. Rep. Rushing, who spoke on behalf of the legislative delegation, said "We know the val ue we have in this college. I have seen it grow to what it has become today and I couldn't be any prouder. We work hard to do what we can when we can and we appreciate the opportunity to serve such a great educationa1 institution." Providing comments on behalf of the college, Dr. Hollingsworth said, "We appreciate all you have done to make today possible. 'Nationally recognized and locally preferred' is not just a slogan, but it has become a APPEA reality for East Central Community College. We are proud to dedicate these renovated residence halls, which are just one more step in our 2020 Vision."
