EC softball squad s~eeps MCC
Led by a strong pitching per– fonnaoce in both contests and a productive offense in the night– cap, East Central Community College's fast-pitch softball team recorded a pair of victories over rival Meridian Community College Thursday on the MCC c...,..s. Tenna Patterson shut down the MCC offense in a 2-0 win in the opener, and fellow sopho– more hurler Mary Smith allowed just two runs and EC bats came alive for a 14-2 thumping in the second contest as lbe Lady Diamond Warriors even their record at 44 under fU'st-year bead coach Kristin Chaney. EC got all the runs it needed in the fourth inning, on an RBI double from freshman Morgan Porter of Enterprise. Porter also singled to lead the offense. Other hitters were LaJoya Griffin of Pbiladelphia, double; and Lindsey Beard ofClarkdale, and Ty Buckley and Dakota Vowell, both of Neshoba Centtal, singles each. Basketball East Central Community College's Warriors rallied from a 55-45 second half deficit to force overtime then held on for an 85-78 MACJC South Division victory over Copiah– Lincoln Community College Thursday night in the Brackeen– Wood Physical Education Building on the Decatur cam– pus. In the women's contest,divi– sion-leading Co-Lin escaped with an 80-70 win despite a 31- point scoring perfonnance by EC's Xzandra Dowd. The score was tied at 36 at the break. Baseball After dropping their two Friday matchups in the annual Rush Invitational, East Central Community College's baseball squad rallied to win one of two contests in Sunday competition of the three-day event. In games played Friday, the Diamond Warriors were defeat– ed 10-3 in the tournament open– er by Southeastern Iowa and
were outscored 15-2 by Faulkner (Ala.) State in the nightcap. Starter Caleb McKee took the loss to Faulkner State on the mound, as the southpaw from Neshoba Central allowed four earned runs on four hits through 4 1/3 innings. McKee fanned 10 batters and walked two. EC's offense came alive against Lincoln Land Sunday afternoon, with Anderson again leading the offense. The sopho– more shortstop doubled in the third inning and singled in the first, fifth and seventh innings. He also scored three runs and knocked in a run. Tournament action conclud– ed Sunday with EC's rally falling short in a 5-4 loss to Baton Rouge. The Diamond Warriors, now 3-3 on the young season, host Shelton State (Ala.) Community College Wednesday. The ftrst contest is a nine-inning battle and will be followed by a seven– inning matchup. Home games are also sched– uled Saturday, Feb. 23 with Lawson State (Ala.) Community College at 3 p.m. followed by a matchup with Kaskasia (Ill.) Community College at 6 p.m. Both are nine– inning contests. See ECCC, page 1OA .· \~~ ...
