McMillin often expressed appreciation to ECCC for the opportunity to begin his college education as a result of a football scholarship. He enjoyed visiting the campus to attend football games, Home– coming activities and Warrior Club meet– ings. He was inducted into fue ECCCAth– letic Hall of Famein 2010in recogni– tion of his out– standing career, which was cut short due to a knee injury. McMillin McMillin was married for 55 years to fue former Shirley Van Hooser ofArcadia, La., when he died in August 2012. They had two children, Lisa and David; five grand– children: and one great-grandchild. 'We are pleased to endow the Dr. Howard Carlton McMillin Memorial Schol– arship at East Central to assist in the educa· tion of any freshman or sophomore student who meets the scholarship criteria," said family members. To qualify, applicants must be a resident of the five-county area served by East Cen– tral Community College; must have a finan– cial need; and must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. Stone Memorial Scholar– ship honors the former Lake High School principal who retired in 1999 following 32 years of service. Stone was a resident of Lake from 1961 until his death this year. The scholarship was established by family, friends and former students of \1r Stone in honor of "his love for education, which was spread to thousands of student during his tenure." Stone graduated from Harperville Hi~h School prior to enrolling at ECCC in 1957. He received a bachelor's degree from Lhf' University ofSouthern Mississippi and later earned three master's degrees from Mississippi State University. McMillin began his optometric practice in Carthage in 1958 and continued pro– viding optometric services to residents in central Mississippi until hi retirement in 1995 He was also involved in numerous civic and professional activities throughout his career.

He was abo a member of fue Mississippi State University Agricultural Advisory Council. Hi profes ional memberships included the American, ~lis issippi and Central Mis– sissippi Optometric Associations. He was also a member of Carthage United Methodist Church and its Friendship Sunday School Class. McMillin was an avid and accomplished hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman throughout his life. He shared wifu many friends his love of hunting, breeding Red– bone coonhounds and his second "profes– sion," as a breeder of exotic Simmental cattle.111rough these hobbies, he became a trustee of fue American Redbone Coon– hound Association and served as treasurer of the Mississippi Simmental Association. He was a 1948 graduate of Louisville High School and attended then ECJC on a football scholarship. He graduated from ECJC in 1950 and received an undergrad– uate degree in animal science fromMissis– sippi State University in 1952. After two years of active duty in the United States Army, Dr. McMillin completed his educa·
