EC softball team takes fifth place in nationals After winning two earlier contests Friday, East Central Community Col– lege's softball team fell 2-0 to Owens a Community College (Ohio) late Friday i afternoon in an elimination game in the campaign with a 37-15 mark under bead coach Scott Hill and assistant Kristin Chaney. East Central, which wound up finish– ing fifth in the 16-team, double-elimina– tion event, qualified for its second– straight appearance in the national tour– nament by capturing runner-up honors in the Region 23 Tournament held earlier this month. East Central managed just two hits in the elimination game with Owens - sin– gles each by Lauren Nicholas of Nesho– ba Central and Kasie Buckley, a product of Newton County lligb School. Sophomore hurler Taylor Bailey (32- 10), who pitched her fifth game in two days, took the loss. Bailey allowed two runs on nine hits. She fanned five batters and walked one. Bailey is a product of Bowie High School in Austin. Texas. East Central begin the double-elimi– nation event Thursday by cruising 12-0 over Mercyhurst North East (PA) fol– lowed by a J -D setback to Kankakee of illinois. The Lady Diamond Warriors began Friday's competition by posting wins over Sauk Valley of Dlinois (12-11) and Kirk.'Wood oflowa (I-D). East Central ftnished fourth in the 2010 NJCAA Division II Softball Championship en route to a 47-11-l record.
