Dinner theater opening at EC

Traditional and blue grass gospel songs and stories of faith and beliefs provide the setting for the East Central Community College Players' dinner theater production of "Smoke on the Mountain" by Constance Ray, sched– uled at 7 p.m. Nov. 4-6, in Mabry Memorial Cafeteria on the De<•atur campus. Set in lhe 1930s, this musiNl.l tale introduces the singing Sanders fami– ly. who perform their tra– ditional and I)Juc grass gospel songs fo1· members of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in \fount Pleasant. N.C. Pastor Mervin Oglethorpe wekomes fam– ily members to the church, where their individual sto– ries and beliefs are shared during the concert. The

audience serves as mem– bers of the congregation. The presentation includes a pleasant mix– ture of energetic rousing numbers, plaintive hymns and soulful praise songs. Selections vary from the widely known, such as "Wouldn't Take Nothing from My Journey Now" and ''I'll Fly Away," to the more obscure songs, such as "Filling Station." The presentation of the characters' faith and beliefs "is inspiring and personal, yet never preachy," according to a synopsis of the play. Cast members and their respective home– towns include Josh Jarriel of Philadelphia, as ~lel'\in Oglethorpe; Shelby Hall as Miss Maude, Summer Richardson as Mis!\ Millie.
