Land helps ECCC secure big victory
Sophomore Dustin Land's first start as East Central Community Col– lege's quarterback was a memorabl e one for the Milton, Fla., native, as he threw a touchdown pass and ran for another in the Warriors' impressive 24- 14 MACJC South Division victory over Jones County Junior College Thursday at Bailey Stadium on the Decatur campus. With the win , East
Central improved to 2-5 overall and more i:mpor– tantly 2-2 in league play and kept alive its hopes for making the state play– offs. The Warriors trail their next opponent Copi– ab-Lincoln (4-0), Pearl River (3-1) and Gulf Coast for the two playoff spots with Hinds (1-2) also hav– ing a shot at post-season play. ECCC will face South-
west (0-3) in the regular season finale scheduled October 28 in Decatur. Land, a 6-1, 210-pound product of Milton High School, most recently started at defensive back for EC after earlier shar– ing signal calling duties with freshman Blake Matherne of Boothville, La., who has emerged as one of the nation's top passers. Matherne, a 5-9, 180- pound product of Belle Chasse High School, was injured near the end of the Warriors' loss to Gulf Coast the previous week and was not expected to see much action against the Bobcats. However, when Land was injured early in fourth quarter action, Matherne came off the bench to lead the War– riors to a game-clinching touchdown and 10-point advantage with just under four minutes remaining. Land, who completed
12 of 20 passes for 106 yards and the TD strike and Mat~erne, who was :SHOBA DEMOCRAT three of SI X for 37 yards, ----- were among several War- OTT COUNTY TIMES ----- riors who had standout performance~ ..against the;..; COUNTY JOURNAL___ Bobcats, who dropped to ARION-LEDGER 2-5 and 0-4. ------- The Warrio·~ defense
