ECCC squads lose close contest to Pearl River

Josh Luckett of Carthage, five each; and Dre Dickinson of Meridian, two. Labaron Weathers of Oak Grove had 12 points to lead the Wildcats, who improved to 16-9 overall. EC trailed 30-22 at halftime. In the women's contest, the playoff-bound Lady Warriors fell 80-75 to the Pearl River women, who avenged an earlier 63-53 loss. EC completed the regular season 19-5 overall and 10-4 in league play under third-year head coach Bill Smith. The Lady Warriors finished second in the South behind Meridian, which captured league honors with an 11-3 record. Southwest came in third at 9-5 and Co-Lin placed fourth at 8-6 along with Pearl River. Co-Lin advances to the state tournament due to the tie-breaker ~ule. The Lady Warriors face Holmes Community College at 7:45p.m. 1\tesday in flrst-round MACJC Tournament action at ltaw~mba. The winner battles the ltawamba/Co-Lin victor at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Finals are 6 p.m. Thursday. Four East Central women scored in double figures agai11St Pearl River, with Tawayatha Evans leading the way with 21 points. Evans is a 5-9 sopho– more forward from Newton.

A controversial technical · foul with just seconds remain– ing allowed the visiting Pearl River Co_mmunity College Wildcats to escape with a 61-58 decision over East Central Community College Thursday night, thus ending the Warriors' season and all hopes for post- season play. \ With the loss, EC fin ishes 11-13 overall and 6-8 in the MACJC South Division under second-year head coach Maurice Bowie. EC and Southwest tied for ftfth place in division competition. Copial1-Lincoln won the South with a 12-2 mark, fol– lowed by Meridian ConummiLy College and Pearl River, which finished tied at 9-5, and Mississippi Gulf Coast, 7-7. The top four teams qualify for the MACJC State Tournament scheduled February is-28 at Itawamba Community College in Fulton. Devarus "Scooter" Walker was the top scorer for EC' with 16 points. Walker, a 6-foot freshman forward, is a product ofNewton County High School.
