Vickers to present ECCC humanities program Nov. 1

The "Ups and Downs of Poetry" will be discussed Thursday. 1\ovember l by longtime East Central Community College faculty member Ovid Vickers, this year's recipient of the Mississippi Humanities Council Teacher Award. The special presentation begins at 7 p.m. in the Vickers Fine Arts Center auditorium. The public is invited and there is no charge for admission . A folklorist, essayist, newspaper columnist and poet, Vickers' articles, essays, short stories and poems have appeared in such publication as Southern Living, Misstssippi Magazine, The Texas Review and The Southern Quarterly. As one ofthe founders of the Mississippi Folklore Society, he served for 25 years as an officer in that organization and con– tributed on a regular basts to its jour– nal. the Mississippi FolkloreRegister. Vickers' poetry is included in two volumes of the University Press of Mississippi's anthologies, Mississippi Writers: Reflections of Childhood and Youth and the com– panion volume, An Anthology of Mississippi Writers. Vickers was one of four Mississtppians selected to Director of External Communication' for the Nissan Company in Canton She is married to Jim Laird and th~' have two daughters, Hannah and Harper.
