Coping with growth With the increase in <:;tudents comes the neeiJ for more !'pace and more help. "We have outgrown the band hall and we have outgrown having two directors, and I am going nuts," Carson said. "But, all musicians are crazy, so that falls in line with that thought!" He added, ..My dream was to one day have 100 in the band here. so I long since passed that goal. I am on edge every year as about half the band graduates and·] have to recruit around 75-80 just to maintain the size we have had the past few years. So an increase of over 30 this year was outstanding! But, whether I have 50 or 500,ljust do my job the best I can. Every single band member is special to me." Carson said such a large number hasn't changed much about the way he runs daily practices. "It runs about t~e same; it just takes longer to get them to the field and take care of band busin£'ss.
