tiona! ho,n.or society of the two– year college, for 19 years--from 1981 to 2000. The Ann H. Burkes Phi Theta Kappa scholarship \V ill be given annually to a Theta Xi member .who exemplifies the hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa-scho larship, leader- ship, service and fellowship . The scholarship will be awarded at the end of each re– cipient's freshman year at East Cen tral. Ann Burkes firsJ._b~came as – sociated with Phi Theta Kappa when she joined the or– ganization while a student a t East Centra l. After graduation from East Central, Burkes earned the B.S., M.S., and Ed. S. degrees from the Univers ity of Southern Mississippi. She returned to ECCC in 1969 as head librarian. After being named Theta Xi advisor, her work with the chapter involved untold hours of work above and beyond her library responsibilities. With her help, the East Central chapter achieved munerous state, regional and interna– tional awards. Burkes will retire as Theta Xi advisor fo llowing the spring 2000 semes ter; however, she w ill remain as the College I i – brarian and is h elping to organ– ize a campus-based Phi Theta Kappa alumni chapter.
