'G unter gains honor from East Central
Sue Gunter joins two other Central Community College standouts Saturday in the ECCC Athletic Hall of Fame. The three inductees, including Billy Ray Dill of Escatawpa, Jimmy Rea of Madison and Gunter, will swell the Hall of Fame ranks to 38. Gunter, a Leake County native, is one of only three coaches in the histor y of women'R collegiate basketball to win 600 career games. r She begins her 19th year at Louisiana State University as the fourth winningest active coach in the nation with an o;verall record of 613 wms and ~72 losses. I Prior to taking the reins of the Lady Tjger program, she spccessfully led teams at f iddle Tennessee ·State and ephen F. Austin. Gunter also served as head cpach for the 1980 United States Olympic Team, which \tas denied a chance at the gold $edal due to the U.S. boycott Of the summer games. l_ She served as an assistant <.pach on the 1976 U.S. team, 1hich captured silver in I ontreal. Gunter was inducted into e National Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in ~999. • former East
Gunter is also a former standout player at National Business College, East Central Junior College, where she attended in 1957-58 and Walnut Grove High School. At NBC, she played AAU basketball from 1958-62, earn– ing All-American honors as her team captured two national titles. She represented the USA m international competi– tion against the Soviet Union from 1960 -62. Dill played halfback and defensive back on the 1964 and 1965 Wa1·rior squads, earning honorable mention All-State following his sophomore cam– paign He is also a former standout at Forest High School and Mississippi College. Rea, a Philadelphia native, was a standout running back and defensive back on the 1956 and 1957 Warrior teams. He also excelled in track, winning first place in the 100-yard and 220-yard dashes at the State Junior Colfect meet his sopho– more year. He also had a stellar career at Philadelphia High School and Louisiana College. Others being honored are Lebrun Sibbo Hutchison, Alumnus of the Year, Jeanette Beevers Thrash, Alumna of the Year, Dr. Linda Lane,A.cademic Instructor of the Year, and Sandra Thomas, Vo-Tech.
