ECCC names trail after Dick Livingston By Austin Bishop The Meridian Star DECATUR - East Cen – tral Community College's board of· trustees voted Tuesday to n ame the school's walking t r a il and fitness area after Richard L. "Dick" Livingston. The decision came during the board's regularly sched– uled September meeting. Livingston, who died of cancer on March 28, was a 29-year veteran of the MiS– sissippi House of Represen– tatives and served as chair– man of the House Game and Fish Committee. Livingston was an avid promoter of the conservation and preservation of natural resources, and helped the school acquire funds for con– struction on the Decatur campus, including the fit– ness trails . The grants, totaling more than $150,000, were made through the Mississippi Department of Wildlif~, F isheries, and P a rks and. the National Recreational Trails Funding P rogram pf the F ederal Highway Administration!U.S. Depart- ment of Transportation. The initial grant was used to complete the half– mile paved fitness trail, that has 20 exercise stations and lights. Another grant will extend the trail to include a recreational/study trail around the college lake. The board also heard a report that ECCC had post- ed a 16th consecuth·e \·'ear of increasing enrollment, school's scholarship policy. Each board member was given a chart which showed the school's annual growth

The enr ollment fo r· t he fall semest er of 2000 is 2,370, up from 2,228 tn 1999. The fall 2000 enroll– ment includes 1,758 full– time students, and is a record high. ECCC had just 819 total students in 1985, and has shown a st eady increase since that time. The school first topped the 1,000 mark in enrollment in 1987 a~d reached the 1,000 mark ~n full-time en r ollment m 1994. The board also voted to allow students who have received their GEDs to com– pete for ACT scholarships. The ACT scholarships are available to any Mississippi resident who enrolls full– time at ECCC the f~l semester following high school graduation or t fi c first regular semester aft~r having received the GED. The scholarsh ips range from $100 per semester for those having scored a 20 Qn the ACT to full scholarships - including room and board - for students who have scored 31 or higher .
