ECCC to dedicate campus project in honor of Day family at Homecoming
The recently completed cam– pus-wide arboretum and outdoor classroom project at East Central Community College in Decatur will be named in honor of the family mainly responsible for its funding. The College's Board of Trustees has approved naming the project in memory of the Day family, with a dedication ceremony scheduled at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, as part of Homecoming activities on the Decatur campus. The project was initiated by the Rev. Jane Todd Gurr ~ of 1951) of Raleigh, ~C. v.no first promoted the plantmg of additional trees and further landscaping on the East Central campus. She was joined m the effort by her brother, Dr Joe Todd (class of 1953), a cardiovas– cular surgeon in Cincinnati, Ohio. Both are among descen– dants of the late Samuel Marion and Eliza Frances Day of Newton County. Other Day fam– ily members who contributed to the project include Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Pruden of Hope, Ark. and J. E. and Betty Cox of Dallas, Texas. Rev. Gurry and Dr. Todd are the children of the late Dr. L. 0. Todd who was ECCC presi– dent from 1934 to 1962.

To date, over $30,000 has been invested in the project, ";th more than half of that amount donated by the Day fam– ilY. Included in the total amount c~otributed is approximately $15,000 worth ofin-kind services by individuals and groups.
