ECCC anna ces recipients for honors, Hall of Fame inductees

Recipients of homecoming honors for 1996 have been selected at East Central Com– munity College in Decatur, according to Dan Harrison of Newton, the ECCC Alumni Association president. The outstanding individuals will be recognized during the annual alumni luncheon begin– ning at noon on Saturday, Oct. 12. Honorees include Ray Britt of Walnut Grove, Alumnus of the Year; Brenda Whatley-Kirby of Forest, Alumna of the Year; Charles Hinson of Decatur, Academic Instructor of the Year; and Jimmy Dempsey of Decatur, Vocational-Technical Instructor of the Year. Inductees into the ECCC Ath– letic Hall of Fame will include M.E. ''Boe'' Davis, Jr., of Cary, North Carolina; Julie Latham of Morton; John W. Golden of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and Malcolm Phillips of Newton. Britt (Class of 1966), presi– dent of the Bank of Walnut Grove, is involved in varous community activities including the Leake County Industrial Development Association, where he currently serves as vice president. A former Wal– nut Grove "Man of the Year," Britt was named "Volunteer of the Year" for 1995 by the Leake County Economic Development

season. Latham was a starting for– ward on the Lady Warrior basketball teams during the 1975-76 and 1976-77 seasons. As a freshman, she helped lead the ECCC women to the North Division and State champion– ships. The Lady Warriors were State runners-up her sopho– more season. Lathan was also a member of the tennis team dur– ing the 1977 spring season and won the state singles cham~ ionship in the Class B division. Golden was an All-State per– former in football and basket– ball during ~he 1954-55 and 1955-56 college terms. He was also a member of the Warrior baseball team. A standout half– back, Golden continued his ath– letic career at Mississippi State University as a member of the 1956 and 1957 Bulldog squads. Phillips was regarded as une of the best ends and pass receivers to weat an ECCC uni– form. He was a member of the 1946, 1947 and 1948 football squads, earning letters in all three seasons. He also lettered one year in basketball. Council. Whatley-Kirby (Class of 1962) is a member of the ECCC facul– ty where she is employed as skills lab instructor for the Associate Degree Nursing Prog– ram. She was recently elected by the Mississippi Nurses Asso– ciation to represent the state's registered nurses at the 19% House of Delegates to the American Nurses Association in Washington, D.C. Hinson has served as a music instructor at East Central since 1983. He also directs the concert choir and the Ac'cents, a select vocal group that provides entertainment a t various civic and community clubs through– out the five-county district. His musical groups are also fea– tured during campus concerts and other special events. Dempsey, ECCC vocational– technical counselor since 1990, has over 23 years of experience as a school administrator. He is president~lect of the Mississip– pi Community/Junior Collese Counselors' Association and will lead the organization in 1997. Davis was a standout center I linebacker on the Warrior foot– ball teams during the 1954 and 1955 seasons. He continued his athletic career at Florida State University where he was the leading tackler for the 1958
