Fonner Nox player honored for effort Special to the Journal ------ - Three football players from Mississippi made significant contribu– rions to the 1994 California (PA) University football team and these efforts have resulted in post-season awards. Jumors Selento Hudson, Darayald Hughes and Charles Love, who all transferred to Cal from East Central Community College in Decatur. were all honored at the recently held team banquet Selento Hudson is a 6-3, 238-pound linebacker from Noxapater, who was named the Vulcans· Defem.tve Rookie of the Year. Hudson became a starter by CaJ's third game and finished the sea– son with 37 total tackles, includ1ng 19 solo stops, a sack, a fumble recovery and a caused fumble. ''As Selento fit into our program' and became more comfortable with the system. he became an tmpact player:· said Cal linebacker coach Warren Maloney. ''He was a definite bright spot for us last fall and will be a dominating linebacker for us next season." Darayald "Dink" Hughes is a 5- l0, 177-pound halfback from Louisville, who was named the team·s Offensive Rookie of the Year. lnjuries kept Hughes out of the lineup until the fifth game but he still managed to be Cal's fifth-leading rusher with 186 net rushing yards oo 50 attempts with three touchdowns. Hughes was also the Vulcans' fifth-leading receiver wuh I8 receptiOns for 233 yards and a touchdown. Hughes also scored three, two-pomt conversions and hdped the Vulcans produce the 16th-best total offense (439.4 yds per game) and ninth-best passing allack (278.6 pg) in the entire NCAA Divisjon II. ·•ninl Hughes got better and beuer with each game." said Cal third-year head football coach Kevin Donley. '"He's a big-time player with big-time moves. Once he got in there, he showed tremendous ability and is too dangerous player to be out on the field regularly." Charles Love is a 5-11, 225-pound junior linebacker form Newton, who was named the Vulcans · Special Teams ··KamikaJce'' Most Valuable Player. He made seven solo tackles on the special teams. California went 2-9 overall last year.
