Coats names ECCC assistants
New East Central Communi– ty College football coach Willie Coats has announced the selec– tion of team assistants for the 1995 campaign. Joining Coats on the side– lines will be one of his sons, Timmy Coats, an assistant foot– ball coach the past five years at Newton High School, and Terry Underwood, who served with the elder Coats on his staffs at Pearl River Community College and Hattiesburg High School. Timmy Coats, who was also an assistant baseball coach at Newton, is a former assistant football coach and head baseball coach at Morton High School. He also taught science at Mor– ton and Newton. In addition, Coats is a former student assis– tant at Mississippi College. Coats is a graduate of Quit– man High school where he was a standout athlete in football, basketball and baseball. A quar– terback, he played three years for the Quitman Panthers, coached at that time by his father, and was selected to the All-State and All Star teams. He signed a scholarship with Mississippi College where he played football and baseball
until a knee-injury ended his playing career. He graduated from MC with a bachelor's degree in health education. He is currently work– ing toward a master's degree. Since 1992 Underwood has served as offensive line coach and strength coach for the Pearl River Wildcats. Prior to joining the PRC staff, he was defensive coordinator and strength coach at Jones County Junior College. He also served seven years as an assistant at Hattiesburg High School. Underwood is a graduate of Seminary High School where he was a standout performer on the football and track teams. He continued his athletic career at Jones County Junior College and Delta State, excelling as an offensive lineman and member of the track team. At DSU, Underwood was the shot put champion in the Gulf South Conference. He also received bachelor's and master's degrees from DSU, each in the field of education. Both assistants are sched– uled to begin their employment at ECCC on Aug. 1.
