The game turned on the last four. Tied 78-78 with :34 seconds to play, ECCC's Terry Thames was fouled in the act of shooting. Thames missed the first but made the second and Lhe Warriors had a one point lead. GCCC brought the ball down looking for an open shot. They had it from Lhe top of the key, but guard Robert Polk turned it down, electing to drive the lane. He stopped, shuffled his feet and was called for traveling, the ball going back to Lhe hometeam with only 11 seconds to play. On the inbounds pass the Warriors' Tony Bailey \ .·~ fouled. AI. Ule line he too missed the first free throw L ,n,"'i • . ··-· ~..-... . ... "' ... , .. ''T'm very proud," he glowed. " My team gave L11e very best of what it had to give." What did he tell them in the last few seconds? Pretty sumdard stuff, "Play half court pressure man-to-man, con– tCSI the shot but don't foul." That's what they did. "If someone had told me they would outscore us 15 points from the free throw line I would have said we would lose the game by 30. We really can't match up with them. They're bigger and better than us." Not last night, coach. Meanwhile all was gloom in the Gulf Coast dressing room. Coach Bob Weathers was not a happy camper. "We had some very selfish ball players tonight," he growled. TI1ey kept putting it on the floor and trying to take it to the basket. We don't normally do that. We played a lot of one on one and I'm not a one on one coach. Our sbOL selection was awful. For example it. the first half we hit only eight for 23 two pointers and for the five assists and seven steals. Carolyn Boatman picked up 13 rebounds to go wilh her 11 points. Paula Nash turned 111 an impressive 10 points, eight rebo~nds and s~ven_ as– sists while tall Misty Wright made stx baskets m e~ght ~hots plus a free throw for 13 points and als?_was cred1ted \\ 1th six rebounds. ECCC had only a 42-33 halftime lead but ran away with the game in the final 20 minutes. . .. The winners are now 4-3 in the Southern DIVISIOn of .he JVUCA and 10-5 overall. For Gulf Coast the year con– unues to be a total disaster with a league mark of 0-7 and a seasonal record of 1-16. Gt;LF CCC (721 - Ouu Smil.'l 12, Cuolyn Bus 7, Jennifer Wells 7, An~S
