East Central falls to Jones County 42-14
On the game's initial possession, it first appeared as if East Central Community College would easily handle visiting South Division oppo– nent Jones County Junior College. The Warriors, following Willie McClelland's 33-yard kickoff return to the EC 43, quickly put together a six-play, 57-yard scoring drive. The march, set up by fullback An– thony Walker's 48-yard scamper to the Bobcat 4-yard line, was capped by running back Sammie Holifield's 2-yard tally on an option toss from quarterback Lamont Byrd who made the pitch while being tackled. Aft.er Pete Porter's PAT, East Cen– tral Led Hl with 12:11 left in the period. But the game's momentum soon shilled in the Bobcats' favor as Jones scored 35 unanswered points en route to a 42-14 win Saturday night on the Decatur campus. Following the loss, East Central dropped to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in divi– sion action. Jones improved to 4-4-l and 3-3. The Warriors will conclude the 1990 campaign by traveling to Nor– theast Mississippi Community Col– lege for a non-division matchup on Thursday, Nov. 1. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p. m. on the Bonneville campus. After East Central jumped out to the early lead, Jones responded with seven-play, 77-yard drive with run– ning b~~k Kenny Jordan finding
paydirl on a two-yard dash. Kevin Pruett's PAT tied the contest at 7-7. Jordan provided the key play on the scoring march with his 52-yard sprint to the East Central 2-yard line. The division matchup remained deadlocked going into the second stanza until Jones exploded for three touchdowns. Jordan ran for two of the three se– cond quarter six-pointers, the first coming on a 28-yard jaunt and the other on a 6-yard scamper. The other tally came on a two-yard burst by Kevin Winfrey. Pruett connected on all three extra points and Jones held a commanding 28-7lead at halftime. The Bobcats again found paydirt early in the third period when quarterback Riley Jones fired a 19-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Clay English. Pruett kick– ed the PAT and extended the Bobcat lead to 35-7. On their next possession, the War– rioN scored Ute team's final pomts when Byrd burst through the Bob– cat defense on a 43-yard keeper for the touchdown. Porter added the PAT. With just 20 seconds left in the third period, Jones tallied the game's final points when Carlos Cook scored from two yards out. Pruett's PAT gave the visitors a 42-14 margin. STATISTICS East Central had 7 first downs compared to Jones' 19. The Warriors rushed for 153 yards and had 96 yards passing for 249 total yardage. Fullback Anthony Walker led East Central with 66 yards on 7 carries. Other Warrior rushers were run– ning back S,ammie Holifield, 21 yards on 9 carries; quarterback La– mont Byrd, 17 yards on 12 carries; and running back Willie McClelland, 4 yards on 4 carries. Byrd completed 7 of 22 passes for 96 yards.
