ECCC board approves Robert G. Fick A scholarship named in memory of former East Central Community College music instructor Robert G. Concerning student services. Dr. Phil Sutphin, dean of students, reported on the 1991 spring enroll– ment which reflects a record amount as compared to prev1ous spring terms. Dr. Sutphin reported the enrollment figure at 13H students. Included in the total arc 432 students who are taking evening classes. He also reported on work being done by the Recruitment and Reten– tion Task Force and detailed plans for Senior Day activities which are scheduled Thursday, March 21, 1991 In old business, college president Dr. Eddie M. Smith provided infor– mation concerning legislative mat– ters of the current 1991 session of the Mississippi Legislalure. Concerning new business. lhe board members were reminded to complete statements of ecooomic tn– terest for the Mississippi Ethics Commission. and heard a report designating February as Communi– ty College Month. Trustees were also presented in– formation concerning statewide changes in community and junior college athletic scholarships effec– tive for the 1991-91 season. Under the proposed changes, athletic scholarships will be reduC'– ed from 30 to 28 in football, from 10 to eight in men's basketball. from 10 to eight in women's basketbaU and from 12 to nine in baseball. Or. Smith also reported on his plans to attend the spring meetmg of the board of directors of the Southern Association of Communi– ty, Junior and Technical Colleges scheduled Feb. 22-24 in New Orleans.

Bids were received and accepted for a sprinkler system on the football field at a cost of $7 ,921.68, as propos– ed by Love Irrigation, Inc. of Jackson.· Various state vocational equipment for the automotive body and fender program were also pur– chased from several companies throughout the state. The board also agreed to raise stu– dent fees for the 1991-92 term. The fee hike represents a $150 in– crease for out-of-state students and a $105 amount for those living in Mississippi. On a semester basis, in-state students will pay $350 for tuition; $350 for room; $525 for board; and a $50 registration fee. Students from outside the state will be charged the same amount plus an additional $600 each semester. In the area of buildings and grounds, reports were given on the appointment of professionals by the Office of Building. Grounds and Real Property and on the initiation of the remaining SB3192Repair and Renovation Projects, which include the Handicapped Accessibility Pro– ject and Mechanical Project. Approval was also given for the college to participate with the City of Decatur in applying to the Pat Harrison Waterway District and the United Slates Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Ser– vice

Established by family members, the Robert G. F ick Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a sophomore who has earned at least 46 cumulative hours and maintain– ed a grade point average of not less than 2.00. In addition, the redpient "must have shown a dedication to the betterment of the music depart– ment through untiring work." Financial need and field of study are not criteria for selection. Each year's recipient wiU be presented a cash award of $100 and have his or her name inscribed on a trophy cup purchased by family members. Fick served as music instructor from 1951-1978. After his retirement, be continued to work in civic a nd community activities until his death on July 12, 1990. In other matters concerning policies and procedures, board members agreed to change the March, 1991 meeting to March 5 to avoid conflict with the spring holi– day schedule. The a nnua l spring break is scheduled March 11-15. The board also approved a policy revision that pertains to college– owned housing for specified person– nel. Those required to accept college-owned lodging as a condition of their employment include the president, dean of instruction, dean of students, head football coach, assista nt football coach, men's basketball coach, women's basket– ball coach, baseball coach. director of student housing and resident manager for student housing.
