EC Teams Begin Season Nov. 5 At EC

With the start of the 1990-91 basketball season only a few days away, coaches at ECCC, Decatur are "cautiously optimistic" concerning their respective squads which begin the new campaign by hosting EMCC on Monday, Nov. 5 in the Brackeen– Wood Physical Education Building. Both East Central teams feature numerous returnees from the 1989-90 rosters. For the Lady Warriors head men– tor Sammy Pace, seven sophomore return from last year's 20-5 squad which advanced to the Region 23 TournamenL The EC women also took second place honors in the State and South Division tournaments. Retumeed include forwards Caro– lyn Boatman (5'10"), Carthage; Tonya Stowers (5'8") from Scott Central High School near Forest; Beverly Ware (5'9"), Forest; and Shea Oakley (5'10"), Louisville; guards Jackie Gladney (5'7''), Louis– ville; and Paula Nash (5'10"), Carth– age; and center Shontel Lowe (6') from Peabody Margent High School in Alexandria, LA. Freshman team members include forwards Marcella Torrence (58"), Morton; and Brooke Smith (5'11'') from Neshoba Central High School, Philadelphia; guards Apryl Hendon (5'1"), Union; Natashia Willis (5'4'), from Choctaw Central High School ncar Philadelphia; Gloria Clay (5'7"), Louisville; and center Misty Wright (5'11''), from Neshoba Central High Schoo~ Philadelphia. Managers are Connie Money, Forest and Marcell Gray, Carthage. Pace has led the Lady Warrior program for five years and has post– ed an overall 74-44 record. Under first-year head coach Jay Bowen, a much improved men's round-ball squad battled to a 9-15 overall mark

Eight Warriors return from the 1989-90 team which lost six games by six points or less and were highly competitive in most matchups. Top returnees include honorable mention AU-S tate performers Michael James, a 6;8" forward from Gary, IN; Tyrone Stowers, a 6'5" forward from Scott Central High School near Forest; and Terry Thames, a 6' guard from Beulah Hubbard HighSchool, LittleRock. Other returning players include forwards Charlie Donnerson (6'4"), from Gosnell High School in Gos– nell, AR; Kevin Kennedy (6'3''), from South Leake High School, Walnut Grove; and guards Eric Mays (5'10"), from Gosnell High School, Gosnell, AR; Tyrone Bender (6'3"), Louisville. Freshman team members include forwards Vandy Hopson (6'6''), Phi– ladelphia; and J.P. Viverette (6'6''), Sebastopol; and guards Luther Riley (5'11''), from South Leake High School, Walnut Grove; Wallie Jacobs (5'10"), from Vanguard High Schoo~ Ocala, FL; Mark Sbibling (6;), Philadelphia; Marvin Nash (6'3"), Cailhage; and Tony Bailey (6'5''), from Villa Rica High School mVilla Rica, GA. Jimbo Edwards of Calera, AL is serving as student assistant. Tim Lathem of Carthage is the team manager. Becky Ezell of Decatur has been named trainer for both squads. Game times are 6:00 p.m. for the wormen's games with men's action scheduled to follow at7:45 p.m. EC will host East MS in Decatur on November 5 and MS Delta in Decatur on November7.
