29~21 Delta rallies to beat EC

East Central Community College gave an early scare to the playoff-bound Mississippi Delta but the visiting Trojans rallied to defeat the Warriors 29-21 in a non-division battle played Thursday night in War– rior Stadium. East Central, which had first half leads of 7-0 and 14-7, could not clinch a season-ending vic– tory as the Delta squad, powered by an offensive line which averaged just under 300-pounds per man, built a two-touchdown margin in the final two periods and put the game out of reach in the final stanza. The Warriors ended the 1989 campaign with a 2-8 overall mark and posted a 1-5 South Division record Mississippi Delta, which is headed to t he state playoffs, finished the regular seasion with an 8-2 slate. The Trojans had a 5-1 North Division record. East Central obtained its early 7-0 lead when running back Sammie Holifield of Lake, who had missed several games due to injuries, capped an 88-yard drive when he found paydirt from two yards out. Ronnie Williamson of Nanih Waiya added the PAT. The key play of the eight-play scoring drive was a 38-yard passing strike from quarterback La– mont Byrd to wide receiver Tony Kidd who fought off two Delta defenders in making the catch at the visitors' nine yard line. Delta tied the non-division matchup in the non-division matchup in the second period when quarterback Ralph Legarde and wide receiver Carlos Bonner connected on a 19-yard scoring pass play. Tom Burke added the PAT. The Delta scoring march covered 59 yards in eight plays. The Warriors regained Uie lead with about four minutes remaining until halftime when

Williamson again added the PAT. The East Central touchdown was set up by David Nichols' interception and return which gave the Warriors possession on the Delta 19. The Trojans quickly respond– ed with a score of their own when Lagarde and Bonner again combined for a scoring pass play, this time from 11 yards out. Burke added the PAT and the game was deadlocked 14-14 at halftime. The score, which game with 1:00 left before intermission, covered 71 yards and took nine plays. Delta put together two 80-yard socring marches in the second half and built a 15-point lead with 14 minutes remain-

ing in the game. The first score, a 36-yard blast by Cornelius Gedward, came with 2:45 left in the third s tanza and the se– cond tally, a 35-yard run by Chris Sypho, occurred during the first minute of play in the fourth quarter. Burke kicked the first PAT, and, on a broken play, lofted a strike to Laurence McGee for the two– point conversion following the final sco~e. East Central put the game's final points on the scoreboard when quarterback Greg Fulton fired an eight-yard strike to tight end Anthony Clark with just over five minutes left in regulation. Williamson again added the PAT. The 15-play scoring drive covered 77 yards.
