East Central Junior College began the baseball season on a winning note March 4 by defeating homestanding Co-Lin 4-1 in the;. first game of a double-header. The second game was tied 8-8 after seven in– nings and was called because of darkness. East Central's John Martin, a freshman hurler from Monroe, Michigan, fired a two-hitter and struck out 10. Martin did not allow a hit.until. the sixth inning. He walked five. Behind the plate was Tommy Wallace, a freshman from Louisville. Patrick Kelly, a freshman from Mor– ton, and Doug Jones, also a freshman from Philadelphia, led the offensive at– tack with three hits each. East Central scored one run in the se– cond, one in the fifth, and two in the seventh. Runs were tallied by Ryan Hull (2), a freshman from Chunky, Mark Fulton, a freshman from Philadelphia, and Torrie Farrell, a sophomore from Walnut Grove. Co-Lin's lone run came in the fourth inning. ECJC had opportunities to score more runs, as the Warriors stranded 17 base

runners. In the second game, East Central rallied from a four-run deficit in the top of the seventh and held Co-Lin scoreless in the bottom of the inning to claim the 8-8 tie. East Central, which could muster but four hits, was led by Doug Jones and Ryan Hull who each had a double. Runs were scored by Torrie Farrell (2), Ryan Hull (2), Will Sumerall, a freshman from Morton, Tommy Wallace, Doug Jones, and Patrick Kelly. On the mound for ECJC were Chris Hemphill, a sophomore from Louisville, who struck out one and allowed four hits and three walks in three innings pitch– ed; and Anthony Triplett, a freshman also from Louisville, who fanned four, walked one and allowed one hit in four innings of work. Behind the plate was Miles Porter, a freshman from Morton. Following the Spring Break., East Cen– tral, now 1-0-1, will resume the baseball season Monday, March 16 at Clarke College before hosting Southwest Tues– day, March 17. Games begin at 1:00 and all are double-headers.
