Warriors Open Season With Win Over Co~Lin

East Central Junior College got a two-hit pitching performance from freshman hurler John Martin of Monroe, Mich., to take a season– opening victory from Co-Lin Junior College 4-1. The second game of the doubleheader was tied 8-8 before be– ing called because of darkness. Martin walked five batters but struck out 10 in the game. He didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning. Patrick Kelly, a freshman from Morton, and Doug Jones, a freshman from Philadelphia, led the ECJC offensive attack with three hits each. The Warriors scored one run in the second, one in the fifth and two in the seventh. Ryan Hull of Chunky accounted for two Warrior runs, while Mark Fulton of Philadelphia . and Turrie Farrell of Walnut Grove brought home the other two runs. Co-Lin's lone run came in the fourth inning.

East Central stranded 17 runners in the game. In the second half of the twin bjll, East Central rallied from a four-run deficit in the top of the seventh and held Co-Lin scoreless in the bottom of the frame to earn the 8-8 tie. The Warriors, collecting only four hits, got doubles from Jones and Hull. Warriors crossing the plate in the contest were Hull and Farrell with two each, while Jones, Kelly, Will Summerall of Morton and Tum– my Wallace each added a run. Sophomore Chris Hemphill of Louisville pitched three innings, striking out one and allowing four hits and three walks. Anthony Triplett, a Louisville freshman, struck out four, walked one and allowed one hit in four innings of work. East Central, 1-0-1, will play at Clarke College Monday and host Southwest Tuesday. All games are doubleheaders starting at 1 p. m.

Warriors have bad week; lose three doubleheaders After winning the first game of the season and tying the second contest, whi ch was called because of darkness, the East Central Junior Col– lege baseball team lost three double– headers in games played last week. The Warriors were defeated at Utica 10-1 and 10--0 Saturday, March 21 , fell to visiting Southwest 10-7 (in eight innings ) and 6-5 (in five innings ) Tuesday, March 17, and lost to homestanding Clarke College 8-5 and 12-8 Monday, March 16. Triplett and Bill Hamrick shared pit– ching duties, with Triplett fanning four, walking two, and allowing six hits, while Hamrick had no strike outs, walked three, and allowed two hits. In the first game with Southwest, Rory Willis, Chris Hemphill, and Bill Hamrick shared mound respon– sibilities.
