He plans to go into the pharmacy program at Ole Miss, so his scholarship will be extended for a third year totalling $4,500. The four students were chosen fo'r the Scholars' Bowl team by ECJC faculty nominations. About a month ago, Mangrum said, 14 students were nominated. After several rounds of questioning by faculty members from different departments, four team members and two alternates were chosen on their breadth of general knowledge and depth of knowledge in specific areas. "Studying" for the com– petition was not possible, Mangrum said. "The kinds of questions they asked weren't things you could learri the an– swers to in a few days or even weeks.'.' The team strategy--if there was a strategy at all, Mangrum said-– was to watch the other teams while they were being questioned
"Winning was a big shock to us," Mangrum said. "We went into the thing just wanting to win one round. Then after the third win, we started thinking if we could beat the Meridian Junior College team, we might have a real t chance to win the com– petition." Their "real chance" materialized, and they made the most of it. Mangrum said after the last round, the moderator stood quietly behind the podium for several moments before an– nouncing, "I guess we have a winner.'' There were 19 teams competing in the Bowl, represen– ting all 15 junior college districts in the state. The answer to the questions above, by the way, are: decreasing energy; Theodore Roosevelt; and the Medieval Age. Any one with questions of similar difficulty might want to call Tammy, Darrell, Alben or Stan at ECJC. It's quite likely that one of the four would have the answer .
