ASSISTANT CHIEF OF POLICE

General Statement of the Function : The Assistant Chief of Police reports directly to the campus Police Chief. The Assistant Chief of Police will assist the campus police chief by maintaining law and order on campus and enforcing the rules and regulations of the college and the laws of the State of Mississippi to ensure the safety of the campus community.

Duties and Responsibilities :

1. Assist the Chief of Police in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating the activities of the department; 2. Assist with scheduling full-time and part-time certified and non-certified officers to ensure that the College community is adequately covered; 3. Assist with scheduling training for officers to ensure that required training and certifications are up to date; 4. Serve as commanding officer in the absence of the Police Chief; 5. Ensure the safety of college faculty, staff, students, and visitors; 6. Use reasoned, deliberate, and courteous responses in enforcing Campus Regulations or federal, state, or local laws; 7. Investigate crimes and College rule violations and complete an incident report to forward to 9. Maintain good communication with members of the campus community; 10. Perform effective and efficient traffic and parking controls on campus; 11. Perform and implement crime prevention techniques on campus property; 12. Maintain sensitivity and provide equal treatment to all races, religions, genders, and cultural groups; 13. Protect the constitutional rights of persons encountered or arrested; 14. Formally advise suspects of their rights as assured by the U.S. Constitution; 15. Maintain regular surveillance of campus buildings, grounds, residence halls, and parking lots; 16. Secure doors and windows when classes are not in sessions; 17. Report any maintenance needs/safety hazards to the Director of the Physical Plant in writing in a timely manner; 18. Promote a positive image of the College by being courteous and helpful to all people with whom he/she comes in contact; 19. Assist with special events on and or off-campus; 20. Detect the presence of any unauthorized vehicles or persons on campus and investigate and report as appropriate; 21. Record, maintain, and protect college data, material, or information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act; 22. Maintain a clean and professional appearance while on duty; 23. Attend and complete required training and demonstrations of efficiency; 24. Establish and maintain liaisons with local, county, state, federal agencies, and public officials; 25. Abide by lawful policies and procedures, orders, and instructions issued by superiors; 26. Maintain a license as Mississippi Association of Chiefs of Police as defined by the Mississippi Bureau of Law Enforcement Officers’ Standards and Training; and 27. Perform other duties as assigned. appropriate college officials in a timely manner; 8. Protect the property of the College community;
