a. Requests for sick leave may be made through the College website (www.eccc.edu) or through a form secured from the employee’s immediate supervisor; b. Forms requesting approval of sick leave should be completed and filed with the supervisor so that sick leave can be approved in advance, except in emergencies; c. In case of emergencies, the employee is responsible for notifying his/her immediate supervisor by telephone or email and for filing the sick leave request form on his/her first day back at work; 7. Employees may donate a portion of their earned sick leave to another employee who is suffering from a catastrophic injury or illness, or to another employee who has a member of his or her immediate family who is suffering from a catastrophic injury or illness. (Please refer to Policy 721.3 DONATED LEAVE FOR CATASTROPHIC INJURY OR ILLNESS); 8. The College reserves the right to request a doctor’s certificate to justify sick leave due to illness or injury.

Personal Leave

A maximum of two (2) days per year of accumulated sick leave may be taken as personal leave. Personal leave must be approved in advance. An employee will receive full compensation for each day of approved personal leave. In addition, full compensation will be deducted for personal leave in excess of the 2 days allowed per fiscal year and/or personal days not approved in advance.

Jury Duty Leave

Jury duty is recognized as a civic responsibility. Full-time employees and part-time employees who work 20 or more hours per week, when summoned for jury duty, will be allowed the time off with pay and should request Jury Duty leave through the normal process. Employees should submit their summons for jury duty to the Office of Human Resources for College records.

Leave Without Pay

Circumstances may occur meriting leave without pay. An employee may be granted such leave for brief periods when justified and approved by the President of the College in advance. Requests for unpaid leave must be made in writing to their immediate supervisor who will then submit the request to the Director of Human Resources for review. Once reviewed, a recommendation regarding leave without pay will be made by the Director of Human Resources to the President for consideration of approval. An employee must have exhausted all available annual vacation and sick leave prior to making a request for unpaid leave. If a request for leave without pay is approved by the President due to the lack of sick and/or annual leave to cover the employee’s absence from work, the employee will be docked pay for the days absent. If an emergency arises causing an employee to be absent from work and he/she has exhausted all sick and annual leave, the employee must produce a valid explanation to cover the absence upon return to work and must submit documentation to their immediate supervisor, who will then submit the documentation to the Director of Human Resources for review. Once reviewed, a recommendation regarding leave without pay will be made by the Director of Human Resources to the President for consideration of approval. Excessive absences of unpaid leave and/or docked pay, as determined by College Administration, may lead to appropriate disciplinary action up to and including termination from employment.
