Policy Title: ADMISSION OF SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS Surgical Technology is an instructional program that prepares an individual to serve as a member of a surgical team. The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technology will be awarded to the successful graduate of the 24-month program and graduates of the 12-month program will be awarded the Certificate of Surgical Technology. Qualified graduates may apply to the Association of Surgical Technologies for the National Certifying Examination and become a Certified Surgical Technologist.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the Surgical Technology Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Must be 18 years of age or older (accepted forms of age validation include current driver’s license, birth certificate, state-issued identification, or tribal identification); 2. must have a high school diploma, GED® certificate, or equivalency examination; 3. Must be in good physical condition as verified by a medical examination and certifying report* (National Certification Requirement); 4. Must have an ACT composite score of 16 with a 12 in math and reading if taken after October 1989, or 12 composite if taken before October 1989, with a 12 in math and reading; 5. Must undergo a personal interview with the Surgical Technology Admissions Committee; 6. Must apply to the college and be accepted for admission into the college; 7. Must be recommended for admission by the Surgical Technology Admissions Committee 8. Submit one official transcript from each college and/or high school to the Office of Admissions and Office of Healthcare Education; 9. Submit completed program application to the Office of Healthcare Education; and 10. *No visible tattoos are allowed in the clinical setting. Tattoos must be covered when in the clinical setting with clothing, a clean dressing, Band-Aid, or a waterproof concealer, such as Dermaflage or Dermablend. In all cases, students must follow the professional appearance policy of the clinical agency. *Revised 4/12/22

Acceptance Criteria

Qualified applicants for the Surgical Technology Program will be considered on a competitive basis. Meeting the minimum admission criteria does not guarantee admission into the program. Applicants for the program are evaluated using ACT score, academic course work, and grade point average (GPA). The number of students admitted into the program each year will vary according to resources available. The application deadline is June 1 and transcripts deadline is June 15 for Spring admission.

Post-Acceptance Requirements for Selected Students

Post-acceptance requirements for students selected for admission include a physical examination including the ECCC Healthcare Core ADA Requirements; MMR immunizations with 2 vaccinations, or positive titer; Hepatitis B vaccines 3-series, or positive titer, or declination statement; varicella-zoster vaccination, or titer, or declination statement; satisfactory criminal history background check scheduled and completed by ECCC; and American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support certification. All students must agree to the 2-step tuberculosis (TB) skin testing and influenza vaccination as scheduled by the college. If a student is allergic to substances used for TB skin testing, the student must submit evidence of QuantifEron®-TB Gold In-Tube blood test (within last 12-months) at students’ expense). All students must agree to be randomly tested for drugs at any point and time while enrolled in any healthcare program. The student is responsible for all expenses associated with testing.
