Policy Title: ADMISSION OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY (EMT) BASIC STUDENTS

Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) is a one-semester instructional program that prepares individuals to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the Emergency Medical System (EMS). Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight, trained in airway management, communications, documentation, general pharmacology, hemorrhage control, ambulance operations, and splinting of adult, pediatric, and infant patients; and special care of patients exposed to heat, cold, radiation, or contagious disease. Students who complete the program are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Exam and become state certified.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the EMT Basic program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Must apply for regular admission and be accepted by the College. 2. Must submit an application for the EMT Basic course to the Office of Healthcare Education. 3. Must have a high school diploma, high school equivalency, or equivalent exam. 4. Must be 18-years of age or older (accepted forms of age validation include current driver’s license, birth certificate, state-issued identification, or tribal identification). 5. Must have a minimum score of 10 on the TABE reading test or 16 composite score on the ACT taken after October, 1989 or 12 composite score taken before October, 1989. Qualified applicants for the EMT Basic Program will be considered on a competitive basis. Meeting the minimum admission criteria does not guarantee admission into the program. The number of students admitted into the program will vary according to resources available. Any student accepted into the program must pay a fee for the fingerprinting and criminal history background check. Payments are made to the ECCC Business Office and a copy of the receipt must be presented to the Office of Healthcare Education. Post acceptance requirements for students selected include a physical examination including the ECCC ADA Core Requirements; evidence of 2 MMR immunizations, or positive titer; Hepatitis B vaccines 3- series, positive titer, or declination statement; varicella vaccination, or positive titer; and American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support certification. All students must agree to the 2-step tuberculosis skin testing and influenza vaccination as scheduled by the college. If a student is allergic to substances used for TB skin testing, the student must submit evidence of QuantifEron®-TB Gold In-Tube blood test (within last 12-months) at students’ expense. All students must agree to be randomly tested for drugs at any point and time while enrolled in any healthcare program. The student is responsible for all expenses associated with testing. The initial drug screening and 2-step TB skin test is included in course fees. All Healthcare Education Division students must submit to and satisfactorily complete a criminal background check. Admission may be rescinded and reversed based on review of the students’ criminal background check. Students who refuse to submit to a criminal background check or submit an unsatisfactory criminal background check review will not be eligible for admission into the program. Students who are dismissed from a Healthcare Education Division programmay seek admission into another educational program.
