APRIL 2019 Gordon Award Recipient
ECCC President Dr. Billy Stewart received the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction during the society’s annual convention April 5 in Orlando, Fla. PTK’s Shirley B. Gordon Award is presented to college presidents who have shown strong support of student success on their campuses by recognizing academic achievement, leadership, and service among high-achieving students. Stewart was nominated for the award by student members of East Central’s Theta Xi Chapter of PTK. The Shirley B. Gordon Award is Phi Theta Kappa’s most prestigious award for community college presidents. Student Awards Ceremony
The 2019 ECCC Awards Ceremony was again held in the evening to better accommodate students and their families. The event on April 25 was held in Huff Auditorium. Recipients of Hall of Fame and other honors were recognized during the annual program. Selection to the Hall of Fame is considered the high- est honor a student can receive at the college. Hall of Fame inductees for 2019 included Shelby Greenwood of Philadelphia, Ryan Ethridge of Collinsville, Anna Burns of Carthage, Rebekah Scitzs of Collinsville, Ni- cole Ferguson of Philadelphia, and Joshua Warnsley of Decatur.
PTK All-Mississippi Academic Team ECCC sophomores Rebekah Scitzs of Collinsville and Marzell Triplett of Forest were named to the 2019 Phi Theta Kappa Com- munity and Junior Colleges All-Mississippi Academic Team, which recognizes scholarly achievements and leadership accom- plishments of students enrolled in the state’s two-year colleges. Scitzs, a nursing major, was one of 15 students named to the First Team. She received a $1,000 scholarship. Triplett, a computer science major, was one of 48 students named to the Second Team. They were honored along with other outstanding community and junior college students from across the state during an event on April 10 in Jackson. Business, Healthcare and Education Expo Career and educational opportunities were available for East Central Community College students when the 17th annual Busi- ness, Healthcare & Education Expo was held April 3 on campus. The public was also invited to attend the free event in Brack- een-Wood Gym. More than 75 exhibitors from business, industry, education, finance, armed services and healthcare organizations were in attendance, as well as a live radio remote by SuperTalk Meridian. SkillsUSA State Honors Numerous East Central career and technical students took top honors in the Mississippi SkillsUSA state competition held in Jackson. Those receiving first place honors represented Mississippi at the National Skills and Leadership Conference in June in Louisville, Ky. First place honorees and their respective hometowns included Miriam Sanchez of Forest, Karley Andrews of Decatur, and Klaire Shirley of Quitman, Promotional Bulletin Board Team; Ashley Clark of Philadelphia, State Pin Design; Jeremy Seibel of Lawrence, Industrial Motor Control; Abbie Stewart of Louisville, Action Skills; Andrew Wofford of Conehatta, Carpentry; James Fayette of Little Rock, Cabinetmaking; Dalton Fayette of Little Rock, Collision Repair; and Preston Grice of Louisville, Auto Refinishing. Sophomore pre-nursing major Rebekah Scitzs of Collinsville and sophomore secondary education major Austin Blaine of Louisville were selected Mr. and Miss East Central Community College for the 2018-19 school year by a vote of the student body. Student Body Officers The ECCC Student Body Association officers were elected for 2019-20 and they include President Matthew Riley Jr. of Brandon, Vice President Kayla Baucum of Newton, and Secretary Bryce Callie Lott and Treasurer Lydia Bishop, both of Sebastopol.
